Oppression.

The weather has been oppressive this past week, temperatures soaring into the 90s on a near-daily basis, air conditioners and swamp coolers across the state ill-prepared for the onslaught of the dry, blustering heat. When the wind blows, it seems to blow steam, like when you stand too close to the oven when you open it up after roasting a turkey.

Except with this scalding wind, there’s no delightful scent of roasted meat & stuffing, but instead the pungent odor of sweat and mildew and slowly dying trees.

Creativity has been shot. By rights, we ought to be all spending our entire day, every day, sleeping, the hibernation period that other animals do during the Winter. When you cannot think clearly because you’re busy wiping away sweat, it’s time to take a break.

I was walking home a couple days ago, talking on my cell phone to a friend. My right arm was crooked to hold the phone to my ear. When I finished the ~4 minute call, I realized my elbow was wet. Soaked. From sweat caused from the contact between my forearm and my bicep.

This has gotta stop soon.

Like they say, “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” and Colorado has been abnormally steamy, Also? my house averages 86 degrees during the day, plummeting all the way down to 77 during the night: windows open, fans full throttle. It’s a miracle I get any sleep at all. I only go into work for the air conditioned bus trips and office.
