So, this guy gives an interview about writing a Flash game that ends up netting him $8,000 a month from advertising revenue and I get all confused.
Who the hell are you people that go to play a game and then end up clicking ads? Apprently 20M pageviews a month = $8k/mo. People do that? The game is based off a World of Warcraft III thing some different kid wrote (and who is, presumably, not making $8k/mo).
I look at the page, and I see the ads. But I am not inspired to click them. To be fair, I’ve rarely (if ever) purposefully clicked an advertisement. I just don’t care to be sold to all the time. I know products I want, I know places to get said products. I don’t need advertisers interrupting my gameplay with mentions of hand lotion or T-shirts.
So, I’m happy this kid is pulling down so much cash. Happy he found something that he can do for his life. Sad that so damn many people expect, encourage, and use advertisements.
It’s like the spam phenomenon. If spam weren’t effective, people would stop using it. But since we all still get it, that means there’s a collection of people who say, “Yes, I do need a larger penis, a wife from Russia, and $10,000 deposited in my bank.”
